5 Things to know about a Newborn photoshoot

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Newborn Photoshoots | Southampton Newborn Photographer

Hello and welcome to Claire Grant Photography, where I specialise in capturing those first precious moments of your newborn. If you’re here, chances are you’re expecting a baby and want to document those early weeks with beautiful, timeless photos. You might be researching newborn photographers in Southampton and wondering how the process works. Don’t worry—many parents don’t even know newborn photoshoots are a thing until they start planning for their little one! Here’s a list of the 5 most important things to know about booking a newborn photoshoot in Southampton with me.

1. The Best Time for Newborn Photoshoots is 7-14 Days After Birth

For those dreamy, curled-up poses that define newborn photography, the ideal time for your session is when your baby is between 7 and 14 days old, though up to 21 days can work too. Babies at this stage are still very sleepy and tend to mimic womb-like behaviour, making it easier to capture those precious poses. After three weeks, babies begin to be more awake and alert, making it harder to get those sleepy, curled-up shots. Booking your newborn photoshoot within the first two weeks of life is key to achieving those adorable photos.

2. Book After Your 20-Week Scan or Before Your Baby Arrives

Given that the optimal time for a newborn photoshoot is within 7-14 days of birth, it’s important to book your session early. I recommend booking as soon as you’ve had your 20-week scan. This allows me to ensure availability around your due date, even if your baby arrives early or late.

By planning ahead, I can organise my diary and make sure I have space for your Southampton newborn photoshoot when the time comes.

3. Relax While I Take Care of Everything

During your newborn photoshoot, my goal is to make the experience enjoyable and stress-free for parents. Many of my clients say it’s relaxing to watch me work with their baby, and some even pick up tips on soothing and settling!

You can think of it as a photoshoot and a little break for you. If you’re feeling tired or overwhelmed after birth, don’t worry—I handle everything, so all you need to do is sit back and relax.

4. Safety is Key – Your Baby Deserves the Best Care

Safety is the most important aspect of newborn photography, and it’s something I take very seriously. The newborn photography industry is unregulated, meaning anyone can claim to be a photographer. However, posing a newborn safely requires skill, experience, and proper training.

I trained 9 years ago with the top pioneers in newborn photography in the UK. Since then, I’ve gained hands-on experience and continue to research baby behaviours and anatomy to ensure I can pose your baby safely and comfortably. Rest assured, your baby is in the safest hands during their session.

5. You Don’t Need to Bring Anything – I’ve Got It Covered!

All you need to bring to your newborn photoshoot is your beautiful new baby! I provide everything else, from nappies and wipes to a wide selection of outfits, hats, bonnets, and blankets. I have a range of textures and colours to create gorgeous, timeless images that reflect your style.

Whether you want to choose specific colours or let me guide you in selecting what works best, I will ensure your final photos are exactly what you imagined—and more!
